Free-living Willow Ptarmigan Are Determinate Egg-layers

چکیده

Egg-laying behavior of free-living Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) was studied at Chilkat Pass, B.C. to learn if females were indeterminate egg-layers in natural conditions. Eggs were removed from clutches of experimental birds during laying, usually beginning with the third egg. All birds were determinate egg-layers and there was no difference in the number of eggs laid by control (K = 8.11 eggs, n = 19) and experimental (K = 8.00 eggs, n = 20) females. Number of eggs did not cue the cessation of laying because females started incubation with 2-3 eggs left in the nest.

Interclutch variation in the size of free-living willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus alexandrae) eggs was examined at Chilkat Pass, British Columbia. Egg volume (19.9 f 0.1 cm3; mean f 1 SE) fell within the range reported for other...

The effect of manipulated brood size on parental defence in a precocial bird, the Willow Ptarmigan

Offspring number was manipulated in Willow Ptarmigan Lrzgopus lagopus to determine the effect of brood size on parental effort in defence of young. Three chicks were added (n = 8), exchanged (n = 10) or removed (n = 12) among broods of females that had laid 7-9 eggs. If parents based effort on the value of the brood, it was predicted that defence should increase with offspring number because pt...

Herbivores Influence the Growth, Reproduction, and Morphology of a Widespread Arctic Willow

Shrubs have expanded in Arctic ecosystems over the past century, resulting in significant changes to albedo, ecosystem function, and plant community composition. Willow and rock ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus, L. muta) and moose (Alces alces) extensively browse Arctic shrubs, and may influence their architecture, growth, and reproduction. Furthermore, these herbivores may alter forage plants in suc...

Use of Large-scale, Multi-species Surveys to Monitor Gyrfalcon and Ptarmigan Populations

—We evaluated the ability of three large-scale, multi-species surveys in the Arctic to provide information on abundance and habitat relationships of Gyrfalcons (Falco rusticolus) and ptarmigan. The Program for Regional and International Shorebird Monitoring (PRISM) has surveyed birds widely across the arctic regions of Canada and Alaska since 2001. The Arctic Coastal Plain survey has collected ...

Can parasites synchronise the population fluctuations of sympatric tetraonids? / examining some minimum conditions

Sympatric populations of tetraonid birds tend to fluctuate in synchrony, at least on local scales. If shared parasites among sympatric populations of different tetraonid species are to operate as a local, synchronizing factor for population fluctuations at least two conditions should be met: i) the host species should share the same (or similar) parasite species, and ii) geographical location s...
